Who this is for

You rent or live in a small home. The power goes out and you want two things to keep working: your refrigerator and your Wi-Fi. No permanent installation, no gas generator indoors, nothing you need an electrician for.

The short answer

Buy a power station in the ~1,000 Wh class. Under the stated assumptions, that covers a full-size fridge plus Wi-Fi for roughly 11–13 hours—about an overnight outage.

The math

These are calculated estimates, not measured results. A refrigerator is modeled at 150 W while running and a 40% duty cycle, or 60 W average. A router adds 10 W. Usable AC energy is modeled as rated Wh × 0.9 battery reserve × 0.85 inverter efficiency, or about rated Wh × 0.77.

A refrigerator compressor can briefly draw 800–1,200 W when starting. The tracked ~1,000 Wh-class models supply 1,500–1,800 W continuously. A 500 W-output unit is the one that may struggle.

Anker SOLIX C1000: 1,056 Wh, 1,800 W, recent $397–$500 range, but price not verified on September 14, 2026. Recheck before buying. It is lighter and has a claimed 58-minute wall recharge.

Reasons not to buy

  • Do not buy a ~500 Wh station for a full-size fridge. The modeled runtime is roughly 5–6 hours, and 500 W continuous output can struggle with startup.
  • Do not buy 2,000 Wh+ “just in case.” The tracked BLUETTI class weighs 53.4 lb and is oversized for the overnight case unless outages regularly exceed 12 hours.
  • Skip the solar panel for rare outages. It is more relevant to frequent multi-day outages, camping, or daily off-grid use.

Total configuration cost

For fridge + router, the station alone does the job. Budget the station price plus tax. A 14-gauge or thicker extension cord is optional if the unit sits away from the kitchen.

The short answer

Watts (W) tell you what can run at the same time. Watt-hours (Wh) tell you how long it runs. Watts are the width of the pipe; watt-hours are the size of the tank.

Why the distinction matters

A laptop around 60 W plus a monitor around 30 W is about a 90 W load. A 300 W-output station can handle it. But 90 W for ten hours requires 900 Wh of usable energy—roughly 1,170 Wh rated under the 0.77 assumption. Output was not the binding constraint; capacity was.

The runtime formula

Hours ≈ (rated Wh × 0.77) ÷ load in watts. The 0.77 models a 10% battery reserve and 15% inverter loss. It is an estimate, not a measured universal constant.

Three worked examples

Working from home: router 10 W + laptop 60 W = 70 W. EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max: 512 Wh × 0.77 = 394 usable Wh; 394 ÷ 70 ≈ 5.6 hours.

Fridge + Wi-Fi: fridge 60 W average + router 10 W = 70 W. BLUETTI AC180: 1,152 Wh × 0.77 = 887 usable Wh; 887 ÷ 70 ≈ 12.5 hours.

Phones: assuming roughly 15 Wh per phone battery, 394 usable Wh is about 26 full charges. Phone charging is small next to a refrigerator load.

Reasons not to buy

  • Do not buy on watts alone. A 2,000 W-output, 500 Wh-capacity unit could run a space heater only briefly.
  • Do not buy capacity you will never use. Router + laptop for 2–3 hours fits a much smaller unit than a 2,000 Wh station.
  • Do not treat advertised Wh as fully usable. Every station reserves energy and loses some to conversion; the examples model those losses.
